As an eager chess player who was in urgent need of a coach to steer me onto the right path, Marius' expertise could not have come at a better time. His manner of teaching creates a comfortable environment, encourages blunders and showed tangible improvements in my performance over the board. Marius Van der Westhuizen is a remarkable chess coach! He Instilled in me a very deep love for chess, Marius set me on a quest to find my own playing style and ultimately helped me gain a deeper understanding of the game to later compete in high level tournaments! Marius is a fantastic coach. He is brilliant with kids and has a lovely rapport with them. He takes time to understand how each of his students think and teaches and guides them accordingly. He is always present at tournaments and has a much needed and encouraging presence, taking the time to go through the match notation with his students after each game. He celebrates the wins and gently guides through the losses, such that his students learn valuable life lessons in addition to chess. He's created a wonderful atmosphere and team with the children at our school's chess group, and I'm enormously grateful for the positive experience my son has had with Marius as his coach.
